The Graduate Center and CUNY Central provide tuition remission for full-time PhD students with Graduate Assistantships or CUNY Adjunct Lecturer titles teaching a minimum of three credits, but only through the first 10 semesters of their PhD program. The Graduate Center’s five-year fellowship packages also include tuition remission. At our February Plenary, the DSC formed an Ad Hoc Committee on Tuition Remission to advocate for extending the current policy to years beyond year five, when most students have no institutional support, and therefore many are working as low-paid adjuncts (with many years of teaching experience under their belts but no salary step increases) to make ends meet. Not having tuition remission, means students are taking on more classes to pay for their continued enrollment, and thus have less time to write their dissertation, among other scholarly pursuits.

The Ad Hoc Committee on Tuition Remission is advocating for increased Graduate Center tuition remission through an upcoming DSC resolution and a public awareness campaign.  Please share your story on what having or not having CUNY tuition remission means to you by filling out this quick survey.
