Comments:
The Fall 2013 semester has, without a doubt, been the most active and busy yet for the CUNY Internationalist Marxist Club. This is really saying something in light of the activities of the previous semesters -- which included intensive work to mobilize support from CUNY students and adjuncts for immigrant workers' successful union organizing drive at Hot and Crusty, weekly Marxist reading/discussion groups, and many other activities. However, Fall 2013 brought a major campaign against the militarization of CUNY, including protests against the Board of Trustees' provocative political decision to appoint ex-General David Petraeus, the reinstatement of ROTC, as well as the draconian proposed "expressive conduct" policy aimed at stifling student protest. We were also very active in the defense of fired fast food workers in Washington Heights, in protests against a possible U.S. attack on Syria, in immigrants' and women's rights mobilizations, and around other issues. This has gone together with the urgent work of helping to build defense efforts for the students and activists arrested for exercising the right to protest against militarization of the City University. In the upcoming semester, many of these issues will continue to be posed; and bringing the ideas, analysis and program of classical Marxism to bear will continue to be a focus of our activity. In addition to films, reading/discussion groups and panel discussions, we are planning a major event on "Vygotsky and Marxism." A number of activities are also scheduled to link support for women garment workers in Haiti, who are battling starvation wages there, with low wage workers' struggles in NYC and around the U.S.

3. CONSTITUTION & DESCRIPTION
Constitution:
Constitution of the CUNY Internationalist Marxist Club Article I: The name of the chartered organization shall be the CUNY Internationalist Marxist Club. Article II: Its purpose is to promote Marxist education, solidarity with the world-wide struggle for emancipation of the workers and oppressed, and awareness of the connection between these issues and the struggle to defend public education, in accordance with the Trotskyist principles of “The Internationalist.” (See Statement of Purpose for more details.) The organization’s activities will include discussions, forums, film screenings and readings. An area of particular focus will be the theory and practice of Marxist pedagogy and its relationship to the ongoing struggles to defend public education in the United States and across the world. We will seek to understand what the mechanics of such an approach to pedagogy means in terms of its actualization in our studies and teaching across CUNY. Article III: All Graduate Center students are eligible for membership. A member is one who has necessarily signed the last membership roster available. If the rosters have been made available during the current semester, then a member is one who has signed that roster. If rosters have not been made available during the current semester, then a member is one who signed the roster from the previous semester. Article IV: The organization shall have a coordinator, who will be responsible for convening meetings and representing the organization. It shall also have a treasurer, responsible for maintaining its finances. If the members so choose in a given school year, it may also have an assistant coordinator, responsible for assisting in the coordinator’s duties. Any active member may nominate any other active member for one of these offices at a meeting held for the purpose of elections. Elections will be held during the second week of the fall and spring semester. Elections shall be by majority vote of those present at the meeting. They may be by secret ballot or open ballot, as decided by those present. Article V: Committees may be created as needed, by majority vote at any meeting. Article VI: The organization will seek to meet at least twice a month. Special meetings may be called by the coordinator as needed. Meetings will include: organized discussion groups, forums on specific topics (such as the politics of education reform and its Marxist critique) and film showings. All events are open to all Graduate Center students as well as to anyone from the public who wishes to attend. Article VII: A quorum shall consist of one third of active members (i.e., members who have attended two or more meetings in the prior two months). Article VIII: Amendments to this constitution may be proposed by any active member, and may be approved by majority vote at a meeting of the organization. Description: The purpose of the organization is to promote Marxist education and solidarity with the world-wide struggle for emancipation of the workers and oppressed, connecting these issues to the struggle to defend public higher education.
