Steering Committee

The DSC Steering Committee, elected by and from the incoming DSC at its first plenary meeting, serves for one year commencing son July 1. The committee consists of 11 voting members: the three Co-Chairs of the DSC, the USS Delegate, the UFS Liaison, and six At-Large Steering Officers.

The Steering Committee

  • makes interim decisions for the DSO as per the policies established by the DSC and is subject to review by the DSC;
  • sets policy when timely action is required, such emergency policy being consistent with established DSC policy, and is subject to review at subsequent Plenary meetings;
  • hears the reports of all DSC committees and take actions in accordance with the purposes of the DSC, making public such actions through the Co-Chair for Communications;
  • reviews the structure and operations of the DSO and makes recommendations to the DSC;
  • advises the Graduate Center President and Provost and the CUNY Chancellor on all matters concerning Graduate Center students;
  • on the initiative of any of its members, reviews general and program policies on student discipline and procedures for implementing these policies, and establishes internal DSC disciplinary policy and procedure;
  • establishes or disestablishes whatever ad-hoc committees are deemed necessary to discharge its responsibilities;
  • recommends an annual DSO budget to the DSC in consultation with the appropriate committees and based on the budget proposal submitted by the Co-Chair for Business;
  • conducts the election of DSC representatives subject to review by the Graduate School Student Elections Review Committee (SERC);
  • invites nominations and appoints members of the DSO to committees;
  • calls for a DSO referendum on any approved DSC motion as deemed necessary by a two-thirds majority vote of the Steering Committee;
  • convenes Plenary meetings and the meeting of the DSCE for election of its officers;
  • selects, at its first meeting or as soon as possible thereafter, the co-chair representative to the Executive Committee of Graduate Council, determines an order of succession of the remaining co-chairs to serve as voting alternates if the selected co-chair cannot attend a meeting of the Executive Committee of Graduate Council, and determines an order of succession of At-Large Steering Officers members to serve as voting alternates in the event that one or more of the co-chairs cannot attend a general meeting of Graduate Council; and
  • reviews its actions for the year and submit a report to the President of the Graduate Center, making this report public through the Co-Chair for Communications.

Jill Belli

Jill Belli is a 5th year student in the English PhD program at the GC and an Instructional Technology Fellow at Baruch College. She is working on certificates in American Studies and Interactive Technology & Pedagogy, and her interests also center on Composition & Rhetoric and Utopian Studies. Jill is returning to the DSC as an English representative, member of the Steering Committee, and member of the Student Tech Fee Committee. She looks forward to meeting many of you as the academic year gets underway!

Kyle Ferguson

Philosophy

Kyle Ferguson is a student in the PhD Program in Philosophy and the Concentration in Cognitive Science. He also teaches philosophy at Lehman College, CUNY, in the Bronx. This is his second year as Program Representative, his first on Steering Committee and on the Professional Development and Cultural Affairs Committees.

Eero Laine

Theatre

Eero Laine is a third year student in the Theatre Program and a member of the Film Studies Certificate Program. His research interests include theatrical violence, mediated performance, sports studies, and professional wrestling. He currently teaches in the Theatre and Film Departments at the College of Staten Island.

Kimberly Libman

Psychology: Environmental

Kim Libman is in the Environmental Psychology program. Her current research "Eating the City" looks at how people perceive, navigate and use urban food environments. She also coordinates a collaboration between CUNY and London Metropolitain University that examines how global cities respond to childhood obesity. She has taught at Hunter College and currently teaches at the New School. Kim is happy to chair the Health Issues Committee this year.

Leigh McCallen

Educational Psychology

Leigh is a first year student in the Educational Psychology PhD program, with a specialization in School Psychology. Her academic interests include adolescent resiliency and pediatric psychopharmacology. She is excited to participate in the DSC as both a program representative and Steering Committee member.

Jared Simard

Classics

Jared is pursuing a Ph.D. in Classics with scholarly interests in Latin poetry, reception studies and instructional technology and pedagogy as it relates to Classics. He currently teaches Classical Mythology and the Greek and Latin Roots of English at Hunter College. This is his second year as the program representative for Classics and his first year on the Steering Committee. He has also served on the Cultural Affairs and Professional Development Grant committees.
