Steering Committee

The DSC Steering Committee, elected by and from the incoming DSC at its first plenary meeting, serves for one year commencing son July 1. The committee consists of 11 voting members: the three Co-Chairs of the DSC, the USS Delegate, the UFS Liaison, and six At-Large Steering Officers.

The Steering Committee

  • makes interim decisions for the DSO as per the policies established by the DSC and is subject to review by the DSC;
  • sets policy when timely action is required, such emergency policy being consistent with established DSC policy, and is subject to review at subsequent Plenary meetings;
  • hears the reports of all DSC committees and take actions in accordance with the purposes of the DSC, making public such actions through the Co-Chair for Communications;
  • reviews the structure and operations of the DSO and makes recommendations to the DSC;
  • advises the Graduate Center President and Provost and the CUNY Chancellor on all matters concerning Graduate Center students;
  • on the initiative of any of its members, reviews general and program policies on student discipline and procedures for implementing these policies, and establishes internal DSC disciplinary policy and procedure;
  • establishes or disestablishes whatever ad-hoc committees are deemed necessary to discharge its responsibilities;
  • recommends an annual DSO budget to the DSC in consultation with the appropriate committees and based on the budget proposal submitted by the Co-Chair for Business;
  • conducts the election of DSC representatives subject to review by the Graduate School Student Elections Review Committee (SERC);
  • invites nominations and appoints members of the DSO to committees;
  • calls for a DSO referendum on any approved DSC motion as deemed necessary by a two-thirds majority vote of the Steering Committee;
  • convenes Plenary meetings and the meeting of the DSCE for election of its officers;
  • selects, at its first meeting or as soon as possible thereafter, the co-chair representative to the Executive Committee of Graduate Council, determines an order of succession of the remaining co-chairs to serve as voting alternates if the selected co-chair cannot attend a meeting of the Executive Committee of Graduate Council, and determines an order of succession of At-Large Steering Officers members to serve as voting alternates in the event that one or more of the co-chairs cannot attend a general meeting of Graduate Council; and
  • reviews its actions for the year and submit a report to the President of the Graduate Center, making this report public through the Co-Chair for Communications.

Theatre

Boris, originally from Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) is now in his fourth year as a Theatre PhD student at the GC. His main research focus is South Asian theatre and performance, particularly South Indian. He also studies Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Dominican contemporary theatre. It is his third year as a DSC at-large representative, and first year in the Steering Committee as the Outreach Officer.

Kyle Ferguson

Philosophy

Kyle Ferguson is a doctoral student in Philosophy and Cognitive Science. He also teaches philosophy at Lehman College, CUNY, in the Bronx, and Bioethics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The 2010-11 academic year will be his third on DSC as Philosophy Program Representative, his second on the Steering Committee, and his first as the Officer for Funding.

Leigh McCallen

Educational Psychology

Leigh is a second year student in the Educational Psychology PhD program, with a specialization in School Psychology. Her academic interests include adolescent resiliency and school-based models of obesity prevention and health promotion. This is her second year as Program Representative, second semester on Steering Committee, and first year as Health and Wellness officer.

Shawn Rice

Shawn Rice is a 5th year student in the English program. His interests include the rhetoric of politics and persuasion, and he hopes to graduate one day and move on to the real world. Currently he teaches at Queens College.

Jared Simard

Jared is pursuing a Ph.D. in Classics with scholarly interests in Latin poetry, reception studies and instructional technology and pedagogy as it relates to Classics. He currently teaches Classical Mythology and the Greek and Latin Roots of English at Hunter College. This is his second year as the program representative for Classics and his first year on the Steering Committee. He has also served on the Cultural Affairs and Professional Development Grant committees.

Suzanne Tamang

Suzanne Tamang is a doctoral candidate in computer science. Her research work involves the application of data-mining and statistical natural language processing techniques to medical datasets. Currently, she is a Graduate Teaching Fellow at Brooklyn College and an Adunct Lecturer at the School of Professional Studies.
